Technology

Build it public and grassroots

Policy Goal

Leverage existing and new Internet-based technologies to more effectively deliver public and grassroots community services; and create stable, unionized, well-paying public information technology (IT) jobs.

Pathways to Change

Create a publicly-owned not-for-profit Internet service provider and mobile phone carrier to provide affordable internet, phone, and mobile data services to residents, possibly leveraging and improving existing public city wi-fi;

Repurpose the retired (phased out) 3G infrastructure for public uses;

Establish and facilitate community-owned co-op services for ridesharing and takeout food delivery as alternatives to existing corporations;

Prioritize the co-op business sector when sourcing products and services for projects and explicitly reject public-private partnerships (P3s) in the provision of public services, including wi-fi.

Change

Note: The resources on each of our policy pages are a starting point for learning about various issues and organizations doing work in these areas. This is not a comprehensive list and VOTE Socialist is not affiliated with the organizations listed here. We hope that these resources will help you reflect on and consider community engagement with the pathways to change suggested. We organize and lead with courage not fear, with transformative vision not limits. Vote on October 15!
