VOTE Socialist to announce candidates on Sunday for Vancouver municipal election

Vancouver, B.C., unceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories: The City’s newest political party, VOTE Socialist, will announce its candidates for the upcoming municipal election this Sunday near Jericho Beach, on city land that has long been a flashpoint in the struggle to add social and public housing to the west side of Vancouver.

Media are invited to attend: Sunday, July 17, 2p.m. near Jericho Hostel site.

1515 Discovery St, Vancouver, BC V6R 4K5

In 1970, the old military barracks at Jericho were the site of the Battle of Jericho - when police forces violently arrested and removed youth who had staged a months-long occupation. The site was also the venue for the historic 1976 UN Habitat summit, an early international gathering advocating the right to housing. Most recently, the Jericho Hostel was rejected by the City as a site for emergency temporary housing during the pandemic.

VOTE Socialist has committed to adding social, public, and coop housing to the City’s westside neighbourhoods, one of over 230 policy commitments contained in the first iteration of the party’s platform

Sunday’s announcement will include VOTE Socialist members who are running for City Hall, School Board, and the Board of Parks and Recreation.
